In Japan, it is considered that people does prolonged eye contact is rude unless they are in close relationship.There are sevral reasons to avoid long eye contact by their custom.Recently it is more westernized and for example, professional broardcasters and actors definetly does prolonged eye contact but I can’t say the western manner is taken root for most of ordinary Japanese people.
